Winter Roof Leaks: The Usual Causes

During winter, you may find that it’s a more difficult time than usual to care for your home, especially for your roofing system. In fact, according to roof repair professionals, the season usually brings with it more issues than usual that can lead to leaks if left unattended.

The usual causes of roof leaks during the winter season include:

Ice Dams

If you live in an area that sees snow and ice during the winter season, ice dams are one of the leading causes of roof leaks in the winter. Oftentimes, ice dams form when your gutters are blocked and the snow from your roof melts with nowhere else to go. As a result, the water remains in the gutters and freezes due to the cold outdoor temperature, forming the ice dam. The ice dam then causes additional moisture to back up and seep beneath your shingles to cause leaks.

Condensation

According to emergency roof services, excess condensation in your home is another reason why your roof leaks during the winter season. If your roof happens to be poorly insulated and ventilated, the warm temperature in your attic and the cold outdoor temperature can cause condensation to form and leak into your home. To prevent this, make sure to improve insulation and ventilation in your attic as soon as you can.

Missing Shingles

There are times when the winter season is accompanied by strong winds and unfortunately, these strong winds can sometimes blow your shingles away from the roof deck. Thanks to the missing shingles, your roof’s interior can be left vulnerable, allowing moisture from any melted snow to infiltrate your home. Therefore, to prevent this from occurring, make sure to have a professional replace your shingles before the winter season if needed.
