When Granule Loss Is a Sign You Need Your Roof Replaced

While granule loss on a new asphalt shingle roof may look unsightly, it is quite normal and not a cause for concern. However, there are some instances when granule loss is an indication that your roof has bigger problems and is in need of replacement. Roofing company WaynCo Roofing, LLC shares three of them here.

  1. Old Age. When your asphalt shingle roof is approaching the end of its service life, you may notice that the granules on the shingles have begun to wash off, leaving bald areas on the surface of the roof. The roof may already be leaking and, when left untreated, can lead to a host of water-related problems in your home. A roof in that condition is due for replacement soon.
  1. Hail Damage. Granule loss on asphalt shingles may also be caused by severe weather events, especially hard-hitting hail. In addition to granule loss, hail can damage asphalt shingles by leaving dents and pits. If you see these signs on your roof after a hailstorm, it is best to bring in a trusted roofer to conduct inspections and address the cosmetic issues at hand before they develop into more serious and expensive problems.
  1. Foot Traffic. Carelessly walking on an asphalt shingle roof loosens some of the protective granules from the asphalt. If your roof sees a lot of foot traffic over a short period, such as when chimney bricks are being repaired, there is a real likelihood that the workers will leave areas on the roof with lost granules. If the roof is older and more brittle, it can suffer both granule loss and cracked shingles.
